How do I check a dentist in Cancún is really licensed?
Ask for the cédula profesional number and the name exactly as it appears on it, then look both up in the Registro Nacional de Profesionistas. That licence is what makes dental practice legal in Mexico at all, and it is public record. Every dentist listed here has their number published with the date it was confirmed, so the check can be repeated rather than taken on trust.
Are dentists in Cancún good, and is it safe?
Some are very good and some should not be practising, as in any city. The licence tells them apart: check the cédula profesional, and for surgery the specialty certificate and its expiry date. Reviews tell you about the service. They cannot tell you whether the person is licensed.
