Procedure

Periodontal treatment in Mexico

Treatment for gum disease, from deep cleaning through to grafting where gum has receded.

What the procedure involves

Scaling and root planing below the gum line, with surgical or graft procedures in advanced cases.

Before

Periodontal charting and X-rays to measure the loss.

After

Maintenance cleanings, and a plan for keeping it stable at home.

Trips across the border

This normally fits into a single trip. Sequencing matters more than the headline price: two extra round trips can eat a large part of what you save. How the crossing works.

What it costs

There is no sourced price range for this procedure yet, so there is no table here. Showing nothing beats showing a number you might budget a trip around. Ask any of the dentists below for a written quote.

Questions patients actually ask

How many trips to Mexico does periodontal treatment take?

Usually one trip, though that depends on what the imaging shows once you are in the chair. Ask for the plan in writing before you travel.

Is it safe to get periodontal treatment in Mexico?

It can be, and it depends far more on the dentist than on the country. Mexico trains good dentists, and it also has people practising without a licence. Before you book, look up the cédula profesional in the federal registry, check the specialty certificate if the work is surgical, get the plan and the quote in writing, and ask who treats a complication once you are home. The warning signs page lists what should make you walk away.

Will my dental insurance or HSA pay for periodontal treatment in Mexico?

Rarely up front, sometimes afterwards. Mexican clinics do not bill US insurers, so you pay and then claim. Some PPO plans reimburse out-of-network work done abroad if you send an itemised receipt with the procedure codes. HMO plans usually do not, so call your plan before you travel. HSA and FSA money can generally be used for dental treatment done abroad; keep the itemised receipt. Card financing such as CareCredit only works at clinics enrolled with it, and few in Mexico are, so ask the clinic first.

What should I get in writing before I travel?

A written quote that lists each stage, the materials being used, what the price includes and excludes, and what happens if something needs redoing. If a clinic will not put the plan in writing before you cross the border, that tells you something.

How do I know the dentist doing this is actually qualified?

Every dentist listed on this site has their cédula profesional number published with the date it was confirmed against the federal registry, and the profile links to the registry so you can repeat the check. For a surgical procedure, also look at whether they hold specialty certification and whether it is still inside its validity window.
